Yoga for Cancer

With Kristy Price, E-RYT 200, RYT 500, Certified Yoga Therapist

  Instructor Yoga Club Teacher Training

When working in Integrative Oncology a yoga therapist must demonstrate knowledge of pathology regarding the subject matter as well as a deep understanding of yogic principles. Although yoga is not a cure for cancer, given the appropriate therapeutic prescription it can alleviate symptoms caused by disease and treatment and enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors who choose to participate. It is important that a yoga therapist understand contraindications regarding asana and can modify each individual accordingly, whether in a private or group environment. This module will provide you with a foundational knowledge base for pathology, assessment, professionalism, safe implementation, stress reduction, and coping mechanisms.

Learning Objectives: You will learn:

  • Overview of pathology of common cancers and the evolution of disease

  • Oncology diagnosis, treatment and complications

  • Medical terminology

  • Survivor assessment and execution of treatment plan based a on private and group environment

  • Overview of Integrative Medicine and implementation of professional skills into the medical system

  • Appropriate meditation, yoga nidra, pranayama and adaptive asana prescription along with benefits (includes group practice of each modality)

  • Yoga Sutras and manifestations of the mind in regards to healing

  • Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques

  • Stress – from a physiological and mental perspective

  • Professionalism and the client/therapist relationship

  • SOAP charting, data collection, feedback and intake forms

  • Survivor and caregiver support

  • Students should be able to effectively create a safe therapeutic yoga class for oncology survivors undergoing treatment
