Sankskrit Revolution with Dr. Marcy Braverman Goldstein

Can you name the Top 10 Most Frequently Mispronounced Asanas? Have you ever wondered what your yoga teacher is saying in Sanskrit? Did you notice that people say 'cakra' (energy center) differently, and do you know how it should be pronounced? Would you like to say the Sanskrit names of the asanas accurately? Have you ever thought that the sound of the word 'santi' resonates with its meaning? Do you know the meaning and correct pronunciation of your favorite chants, Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, the Bhagavadgita, and more? This 7.5 hour Teacher Training Immersion: Sanskrit Revolution will demystify the pronunciations, spellings, and definitions of terms that you hear, say, read, and sing. You will learn the sounds of the letters in the syllabary (technically not an ‘alphabet’) and embody your new skills in Sanskrit-based asana practice. Understanding the basics of the linguistic foundation of yoga will deepen your practice and/or enhance your teaching in wonderful ways!

Marcy Braverman Goldstein, Ph.D. teaches at UNC Charlotte and yoga studios and conferences nationally. Drawing from her training at University of California at Santa Barbara, tutorials with Dr. B.N. Pandit in India, and 15 years of practicing yoga, she teaches inspiring Sanskrit workshops that are as playful as they are profound. www.sanskritrevolution.com

This workshop will be held on 5 Mondays January 28 - February 25 including a Sanskrit-based asana practice co-led by Melanie Snyder and Marcy Baverman. Price includes workshop study materials.

About Marcy

Dr. Marcy Braverman Goldstein currently teaches Global Connections classes that focus on Hinduism, Buddhism, and yoga in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. After receiving a Bachelors degree from the University of Rochester, where Dr. Douglas Brooks introduced her to the study of Indian traditions, Marcy continued her studies in the history of religions, Sanskrit, and Indian Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she received her Masters and Doctorate degrees. At UCSB Professor Nandini Iyer introduced her to Sanskrit, and she took advanced courses with Dr. Gerald Larson. Dr. David White supervised her award-winning doctoral dissertation that analyzed descriptions of madness and intoxicated states of devotion in a variety of texts from Ayurvedic and Hindu Tantric traditions. Her Sanskrit training included tutorials with Dr. B.N. Pandit in New Delhi, India on a grant from the Muktabodha Indological Research Institute. She also participated in Sanskrit Graduate Seminars through Muktabodha led by senior US scholars Dr. Douglas Brooks and Dr. Paul Muller-Ortega. She has taught Sanskrit at Loyola Marymount University's Yoga Philosophy Certificate Program, at yoga studios throughout the country, and as private tutorials to beginner and advanced students of yoga. Upon first hearing Sanskrit, Marcy fell in love with it, and she enjoys showing others the beauty of this language.

Testimonials:

"Marcy is a wonderful teacher proving great depth of knowledge to a complex subject in a light-hearted, fun and playful manner.  Her addition to our 200 and 500 teacher training programs is wonderful fit, as our teachers are each experts in their subject of teaching.  It's gratifying to watch how thoroughly each of our current and future instructors appreciate Marcy's teachings and to see their level of excitement around this ancient language increase as their knowledge grows.  ~ Melanie Snyder, Director of Yoga Club Teacher Training, RYS

"Marcy has always had a great heart and a keen acumen but it is the way she listens, reaches across the conversation, and engages the all of you that will keep your mind and spirit engaged in the challenging prospect of Sanskrit language study. Marcy is a wonderful scholar, a real professional, and that's a serious requisite for teaching this subject but what she will do to make this learning fun as well as serious will be worth your every effort. It will truly be a pleasure to work with Marcy, as thoughtful as Sarasvati, as kind as Laksmi. Go for it. This is your chance to learn Sanskrit the right way." ~ Dr. Douglas Brooks, University of Rochester, one of the world's leading scholars of Hindu Tantrism

"Marcy adores teaching Sanskrit and it shows in her teaching. She is a clear and effective Sanskrit teacher. Marcy takes students step by step in learning correct pronunciation. As a hatha yoga practitioner herself, Marcy can relate to the modern yogin. With a doctorate in the area of Asian religions, she has the credentials to teach Sanskrit with accuracy and a depth of knowledge.” ~ Sarah Faircloth, Anusara Yoga Director at Be Yoga in Charlotte, NC

“Marcy is a wonderful teacher of Sanskrit. I enjoyed taking her classes in Los Angeles for 2.5 years. She is very systematic, and playful at the same time, and presents interesting material in just the right increments to help people master this difficult (for me at least) language.” ~ Scott Lewicki, NASA engineer by day, Certified Anusara yoga teacher by night

“Dr. Marcy Braverman Goldstein's Sanskrit students at Loyola Marymount University have distinguished themselves by using their hard-earned knowledge and sound preparation in Sanskrit grammar not only to improve their understanding and teaching of Yoga but also to delve into texts such as the Yoga Sutra.” ~ Christopher Key Chapple, Doshi Professor of Indic and Comparative Theology, Loyola Marymount University

Samples of What you will Learn with Marcy:

  • āsana ~ The verbal root of ‘āsana’ is /ās (to sit, rest; to be present; to do anything without interruption; to celebrate). Picking apart this word adds meaning to it beyond 'physical posture, seat.'  Each āsana is a restful place to be present without interruption, a celebration.  It also means 'the front part of an elephant's body,' among other things. To say ‘āsana,’ stress the initial long 'ā,' and pronounce it like the 'a' in 'father.' The other short 'a' vowels should be pronounced like the 'A' and 'a' in 'America.' Take all that to your yoga mat!
