Therapeutic Yoga for Kids With Karen Charlton, E-RYT 200, Physical Therapist Instructor with Yoga Club Teacher Training Yoga for Kids: Through this weekend immersion you'll learn a fresh and creative approach to educating, exercising and empowering children of all ages and abilities through the practice of yoga. We'll explore creative styles of yoga for children of various age groups from toddlers to teens. We'll introduce you to create themes, games, and partner yoga techniques to keep children engaged and excited about their yoga practice. You'll also learn age related levels of ability, restrictions and proper adjustments. Therapeutic Yoga for Kids: We'll also teach you how to integrate the principles and practice of yoga therapy into the assessment and care of the child, providing a more holistic, creative, and compassionate approach to the management of the pediatric population. We'll teach you the skills necessary to practice yoga therapy for children with hypotonia, hypertonia, musculoskeletal imbalance, chronic and/or progressive disorders, and sensory dysfunction. You'll learn to perform a unique and functional assessment to determine the needs of each child and to utilize breathing/pranyama, asanas/postures, sound therapy, and relaxation techniques to improve the child’s overall health, well-being and function. The course will include lab sessions and daily yoga practice to demonstrate and apply newly learned skills. Required Pre-Reading: TBD Required Materials: Yoga mat, 10’ yoga strap, 4” yoga block About Karen Charlton, E-RYT 200, PT Karen received her Master of Physical Therapy degree from Emory University in 1987. Throughout her career, she has focused on evaluating and treating the body, acquiring a very functional knowledge of how the body works. She has been a fitness instructor since 1981 and lectured nationally for Disabled Sports of America on adapting fitness principles for individuals with physical disabilities. She began her yoga training over 10 years ago and received her RYT 200 through YogaFit. She has also studied under various other yoga teachers, with a great love for the Anusara method. She has trained in Yoga Therapy with Leeann Carey Yoga, Professional Yoga Therapy, and YogaFit. She is co-author of Pediatric Yoga Therapy: an Alternate Approach to the Treatment of Children with Physical and Sensory Needs. She currently teaches yoga to both adults and children and uses yoga therapeutically in the treatment of her patients. Karen has a passion for teaching, which she combines with a deep knowledge and understanding of the body and how it moves. Her focus on alignment and her spirit of teaching enable the student to experience his/her practice in a deeper and more meaningful way.
